There are RULES when branding a new blog.

Like, a real, honest-to-goodness, professional one. For instance, when creating your blog or online business, good branding requires you to:Bitch, Please! | Why choosing to use "bitch" in my branding is the BEST thing I could have done for myself AND my blog |

  1. Always self-host.
  2. WordPress is best
  3. Define your niche.
  4. Streamline your fonts and images.
  5. Pin the shit out of it.
  6. Relate to human beings on social media.
  7. And NEVER use a bad word in your domain–

Fuck. Whoopsy-daisy.

I realize it’s a controversial choice to be branding this blog, and thereby myself, a bitch. But you know what – I like it.

And like most things I do, there’s a lot of thought behind it. So, before you judge me (or, even better maybe, after you’ve been doing it for weeks in secret), let me femsplain those reasons to you.

First off:


For reasons I struggle to comprehend, this seems as of late, to be its own dirty word. I’m told it signals divisiveness and begs for special treatment, but truthfully, I see it simply as a demand to be equal. The dictionary (my favorite), defines it as “the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes.”

Bitch, on the other hand, is “the female dog or some other carnivorous animals.” Of course, we know it’s used to mean much more than that – a derogatory term for human women and the things we find most reprehensible and unacceptable in the gender, itself. Where masculinity brings to mind thoughts of strength and stoicism, femininity is most often associated with fragility, emotions, and for whatever reason, a rather nauseating shade of pink.

As Meriam-Webster (I do love the dictionary) puts it – a bitch is lewd, immoral, malicious, spiteful, and overbearing. And over the years, we have let that word evolve even further to signify those things that we find so unpleasant to do – “that’s a bitch” – that they somehow deserve to be characterized as abhorrently feminine.


Do you see the problem here?

Since I started writing about female archetypes in horror film, I’ve been especially interested in realizing specific traits and ideas for the feminine; basically, recognizing and rewriting “feminine” as both a positive and strong attribute.

I see bitch in these terms: I am female, I am mammal, I am opinionated, I am outspoken, I am emotional, I am strong (and I like that nauseating shade of pink. Also black. Also glitter).

When I use this word to define myself, in my branding, and to describe what I do, I hope I demonstrate for you its irony. And everyday you see it, I hope I help you question your own negative connotations with it. You dig?

This is who I am.

Branding is supposed to be about you. Who are you? As a person, as a blog, as a business. I’ve always seen myself in the 80’s Van-Halen rocker-chick “that girl is Bitchin'” sort of way (please don’t ask me why I associate this with Van-Halen, I just do). I’d define my personality as vibrant, complex enough to be considered complicated, and intensely loud. I am brash. I have a lot of feelings. And, per the focus of this blog, I aim to be critical.

By traditional thinking – I’m a bitch. Truthfully, I’ve been called one (not nicely) more times than I can count. When thrown at you without your own solicitation, it stings a bit. Really? You think this little of me? You find me weak, obnoxious, cruel?

But that definition goes against precisely everything I feel when I feel bitchin’. When I feel bitchin’ I feel powerful, important, and like someone others would want to emulate. If you know me, or you are beginning to know me through my writing, then you know I wear this moniker proudly. Because I choose to.

I am not your bitch, but I am my own bitch – embracing my femininity, my bad-ass-ery, my super cool feminine super powers, and all of the feminine’s beautiful, fierce, and layered qualities. I define me.

Oh, and you know what?

Bad words sound good.

Perhaps you’ve noticed – I am not the kind of writer who thinks cursing is lazy English. On the contrary, a well-timed shit, or a deeply meant fuck can enhance a sentence like a gorgeous row of pave around a big-ass ruby of a gemstone. So it behooves me to cuss in my moniker because not only does it sound god-damn great, it tells you what to expect when you arrive here.

Plus, I think it says something about pre-conceived notions of ladies who dare criticize, don’t you think? I do. And, in case you hadn’t picked up on it yet:

I love it.

And shouldn’t that be enough?
